I just viewed a sad story of two Brits caught with luggage full of cocaine. I would like to find out their addresses at the Mexician prisions where they will be spending the next few years. Pehaps a penpal would help to pass the time. My email is lilirope52@hotmail.com if you are allowed to forward the addresses of Lucy Baker and/or Scott Campbell I would try to keep their spirits up with a friendly correspondence. Thanks, Phyllis Callahan

I found the address for Lucy Baker! It took a while, but I finally found the address at this official Mexico prison link: www.reclusorios.df.gob.mx/. The address is:Centro Femenil de Readaptación Social Santa Martha Acatitla/Calzada Ermita Iztapalapa s/n, Colonia Santa Martha Acatitla. The "s/n" in the address means "whitout number."

Does anyone know if they still keep in touch? I would be disappointed to find out that after going through that together they had to draw a line under everything?

Oh the pleasure of an unread book
Savouring its unread look
Don't want to start, cause I know I'll finish
And then the pleasure will diminish
English books in Mexico
Are a rarity you know
Treated like gold dust, smuggled, contraband
For us locked up Brits in this far away land.

It makes no difference if a book has spice
If you have read it more than twice
I know what happens it's not fair
Only the first time I could actually care
In England I would shun romance
But in here it's got more than a chance
Murder and mystery are my usual choice
But now every book has a voice
So please I'm begging 'release me soon'
Before I start enjoying Mills & Boon.

people can make bad mistakes but after tossing the coin and seeing it go against them and still decide to go through with it you have to do the time if you're willing to commit the crime!

If we had people smuggling drugs into our country for whatever reason i know we'd all have something to say about it...

Fair enough you make a mistake for whatever reason, i do feel for them all out there on their own but surely they took that chance knowing it was a possible outcome
Posted by:StephJune 6, 2008 8:20:04 AMRespond ^
I agree totally about your comment. Let's hope that they have learned a lesson. One can only hope from this that somebody else will think twice before commiting this senseless crime. I just wanted to know if there was an address in English that I could send a letter?

And you never made a mistake?? Give these kids a break! I hope that they survive the results of their mistake without any lasting scars.
Posted by:BarryJune 16, 2008 4:30:25 AMRespond ^
There's a big difference between making a simple mistake and smuggling drugs which if we all keep in mind, they knew they would be doing!!

Not only were they aware of the consequences should they get caught (most likely given everything gets x-rayed) but instead of living a normal life and facing the fact they'd have to come home and get a normal job in the rain - (like the majority of us) they actually let greed take over and decided to have a holiday of a lifetime at no expense on the condition they smuggled these drugs!

Yeah, it's a shame they were done over but you can't feel too sorry for them! They knew what they were getting themselves into from the get go, hash or coke it's all illegal at the end of the day!!

I'm musician, and if you (or she) give me permission, I can transform her poem bellow in a strong song, record it and send u by e-mail. After that, u can send her it in a CD through the post office. Chords will give life for her feelings, her verses, and It will help to make she knows she is not forgotten. I want to give my contribuition, and this is the way I found to make her smile grows up, at least for some moments.

Firstly Larry, if you read what i've written you will see that i say that yes, it is a shame for them.

If you watched the programme you can see they fully understood what it was they were doing. If you speed and get caught, points on your license are the result.... you smuggle drugs in a foregin country you go to jail... that happens in any country!

You can't judge me as you don't know anything about me... i'm not on here asking for their contact details cause at they end of the day, although they've done wrong... they're still humans and why would they want to hear from total randoms?!

If they had managed to pull it off who is to say they wouldn't have enjoyed that buzz and done it again?!

I def take the view that they deserved to get caught...

What happens to child porn rings, is it a shame that they get caught and have to serve time in jail Larry?

I know it is hard but she will make it. I spent 4 years in Santa Marta in the 70s along with 40 other American women but we did survive. We had a reunion in San Fransisco 20 years after our release on the prisnor exchange. We are all still friends and doing great. We learned our lesson well and never got in trouble again. Best wishes to your daughter and to you. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you.

Steph, here in America and other countries, people have gotten FAR LESS time for similar if not worse crimes. People in the same show that were documented got 4,5,6 years. This was one of the heavier ones. With that said, it's common sense that what they were doing was illegal, but comparing it to child porn? Moronic.
Posted by:DebraJuly 2, 2008 1:50:00 PMRespond ^
Yeah, it was a bit extreme Debra, it just annoys me when other people I.E Larry, compare speeding to smuggling drugs... as another person commented, you learn your lesson by doing something silly so the time might be a bit harsh but when they get back to the UK it should get a bit easier for them. Mexican law is far different from most other countries but there was always that risk they were aware of.

They seemed to be keeping strong and coping the best they could so i think it's def something they've come to terms with!

Secondly Steph,Anyone who harms a child intentionally for there own perverse pleasure belongs in prison"forever".We were not discussing that issue. Thirdly, some people i'm sure you repect smuggled death,I.E.;Reagan,Bush 1,and Ollie North.Lets not forget the elder Kennedy and his explots, and oh, Baby Bush .Our own goverment smuggled drugs into this country (lots more than 17 kilos)and not one of them are sitting in a Mexican prison.Does that not offend you? I bet you've not thought much about these offenders even tho thousands of people were killed by their deeds. And don't tell me that drugs kill many more than that, drugs are a personal choice. Not a wise one ,but one all the same.
Weapons of death being smuggled into someones country is probably not high on your list of things to rail about. An how about senting people to there deaths on a lie. From the beginning of our discussions i have never condoned what they did.You on the other hand have railed against these two as if they have have offended you personally.Where's your indignity on issues of life and death? Issues that really mean something ? I wish you'd turn your convictions onto a issue much more deserving of your anger.Regardless of what you think personally about these two people it does not amount to a hill of beans compared to real world issues. An yes Steph some of us are still in touch with the real world and get upset at real issues. Then if we have any feelings left we try to encourage other to find there way.If you have any you can contact me personally and tell me about them so that your fans won't know. Steph ,I believe in truth(as Scott and Lucy have admitted there deeds)and bared there mistakes for all to see.Now get your foot off their necks and let them up.At least they are paying for their misdeeds.Your Friend ,Larry

Maybe time to get over yourself Larry?

I'm not here to argue, if you want to continue it off here however, that's your decision...

I don't really feel anything for them, you don't know them, where they've been or what they've done... they weren't in a tight spot whatsoever, they had to decide between getting a job and moving home or that, they have admitted they knew what they were getting into so why discuss that, they've already served the majority of their time and the chances are, when they come back to the UK they'll be released early...

You can say what you like about me as again, you don't know the first thing about me, only what's been said on this. If we judge people on that alone then maybe look back at your own comments?

I wont be commenting on anything else now, your comments have made me realise that people posting comments on forums like this are all attention seeking nomads looking for acceptance or silly arguements to pass their time... for anyone look for their addresses, maybe read it on the comments above instead of asking again... Larry, go find some other fool to go round in circle with!

Sadly, you absolutely hit the nail in the head.

Aside of being completely extraneous to the article, these comments stand out by showing some kindness and empathy you would NEVER see if these people were talking about a Latino or African - or any "person of color" - caught while entering US with drugs... or even without them, for that matter (like a migrant).

The pair is actually lucky they weren't caught smuggling drugs into countries that have death penalty for that.

I just read the sad article about the mexican children in prison with their parents and accompanying photographs. The only comments I see posted below the article are those lamenting the fate of a poor british couple incarcerated in mexican jails for drug smuggling. A majority of commentors wanted to be able to contact this couple to "console them".
Who the hell are we anyway?
Posted by:Don SchneiderJuly 29, 2008 9:53:21 AMRespond ^
We want to ask ourselves why they come here to America! Look how corrupt their government is. At the very least, the Mexican Government should have private dormitories or foster facilities where these children can come for 6 months or a few years at a time on rotation, and maybe live with family elsewhere for a time.

The "war on drugs" is an endless fraud that makes corrupt politicians & other criminals rich, while the poor mules suffer even more!

Make drugs legal or semi-legal like in Holland! Use profits for treatment of addicts & for drug abuse education!

I too noted the fact, that under this photo of a child being raised in a prison, there are only one or two mentions of it.
It can only be deduced that with the deluge of violence and useless crapola people saturate themselves with, that empathy and kindness are virtually dead. Some of the comments above are apparently from people who's main dialogue is one of skepticism, cynicism and sarcasm. That is sad and disturbing. If it's within my power; I wish to demonstrate love and kindness.

I notice there are many reading these blogs; I appeal to you. Be kind. Be loving.

Be active in demonstrating these things. The world needs your intelligence and loving.

I'm surprised to see that all the posts here are about a different story than the one that's here. I don't know anything about these Brits, but it sounds like they will do their time and then go home to their safe, middle-class families. Too bad, but they knew what they were getting into.

My heart goes out to the women and children in this story--they will have no such safe haven when they get out. But then they're just brown people who don't even speak English.

What is the matter with these people putting children in prison with parents? Where is the United Way or some humanitarian organization. Get them out of there!

These children are amazing and beautiful. Larry and Steph, on the other hand, need to both get a life. LOL

As I said earlier I spent 4 years in Santa Marta along with 40 other American women. Several of them had babies while in prison and kept their children with them. Now these children are all in their 30 and doing great. None have ever been in trouble with the law, probably due to the fact that their mothers raised them right, as they learned from their experiences. The one daughter is just finishing getting her doctorate in psychology. The children are put in a separate building from their mothers when they turn 4, but see their mothers daily and are treated very well in the school. It’s too bad some people are so full of hate. They would enjoy life better if they had some compassion. Larry and Steph find yourselves a private chat room somewhere else so you can duke it out where we don’t have to see it.

Yes, they did wrong, but everyone deserves a fair trial. Everyone deserves the fair chance to an appeal. It doesn't sound like they had either of those, and that is a disgrace!

Other than that, the prisons look similar to my college dormitory. Seriously, if they take on studying for a degree it would be no different than a college experience. They even are allowed to have time walking on "campus". 5 years of this isn't as bad as being locked up in a US prison for 10 years.

Why should they be any more deserving of pity than any other inmate of those prisons.surely they would have had a more priveledged and educated start in life than most of the south american prisoners.

I think there is a huge difference in trying to smuggle several kilo's of marijuana. This couple were played by professional drug smugglers, although they might have been naive it is a sad story. I wish the best of luck to both and to do their remaining prison time in their own country.

Please let your daughter know that she's in my prayers. I understand about your need for privacy, but I'm a bit confused since I thought anyone could just address correspondance to the specific inmate at the jail's general address, and that this was public knowledge..? I thought I saw the address in here. I respect that while our intentions are well-meaning she might not be interested in writing to us; if she should happen to be: Hi, Lucy, my name is Paula. I'm 28. I work with kids who have been sexually abused navigate the criminal "justice system." I, too, love to read, but working at a non-profit severely limits my book-buying budget, so I like you also cherish and dread the end of every page. I just finished "Reading Lolita in Tehran," about an Iranian teaching British and American Lit. to young women adjusting to their new Islamic Republic. I hope your access to books grows/continues. I know I couldn't survive them. WordsEcho@aol.com
Abrazos, Paula

Just pursuing your existence in the US for so many people in poverty means running a minefield of legality. Forced to the fringes of society we see the most vulnerable victimized by a system that rewards the rich and criminalizes the poor...for shame.

Wow...what a story and what a sad photo essay. One side of me says that the children are lucky to be with their mothers, but the other side sees the violence and feels so horrible for those children who have to live like that. A very sad story indeed.

It was only this morning i managed to catch some of the documentary about Scott and Lucy, and must say i was touched by their story. So touched, it has been on my mind most of the day and have felt compelled to have looked this site up on the net and type this very comment. Yes they did wrong but they know they did wrong and appear to be so humble and accepting about it all. I feel they were totally conned are paying well over the price for their crime. I hope they are both well and my heart goes out to both of their families xx
