the conspiracy: Starting in the mid-'40s, American cities began putting fluoride into their drinking water under the guise of preventing childhood tooth decay. Freedom-loving Americans found it hard to swallow. As Dr. Strangelove's Brig. General Jack D. Ripper put it, "Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face?"

the conspiracy theorists: The John Birch Society peddled the fluoride-as-pinko-plot idea for many years. (One Bircher recently quipped, "Don't be surprised if we learn soon that the fluoride in Chinese toothpaste is nuclear waste from North Korea.") Today, fluoridation opponents include scientists and environmentalists who say overexposure can cause serious health effects. The Fluoride Action Network, the most prominent anti-fluoridation group, was cofounded by former Sierra Club executive director and ecoguru David Brower.

meanwhile, back on earth: Those toothless paranoids may have been partly right. Though fluoride's not eroding our moral fiber, research shows that too much of it eats away teeth and bones. Which is a problem, since it's not just in 59 percent of Americans' water; it's also turning up in foods made with fluoridated water, including ice cream, hot dogs, and beer.

Kookiness Rating: tin foil hat (1=maybe they're on to something, 5=break out the tinfoil hat!)

No drug should universally put into water supply. People who wanted it, had the option of pills or fluid to dose themselves. Most of what is used is industrial waste. Pretty dumb.

Continuing to consume a poison is the height of stupidity. I've spent thousands of dollars to filter the water coming into my home. Floride is everywhere though - just like corn syrup. It's very difficult to avoid.

For the first time in my life I have actually taken the time to read up on flouride and I dont like what I see. This substance should be removed from our "diets" immediatly. It has NO medical or dental benefit whatsoever and could be making us ill in ways we cant even begin to fathom.
Brushing my teeth this morning will be done with baking soda.

Of all the poisons going into our water supply, I think fluoride is pretty innocuous - probably binds to something really poisonous and slides on through.

Mother Jones used to be a good investigative magazine. It seems like it reverted back to the 1950's.

Read the January 2008 Scientific American which did a much better investigation of the fluoridation science.

Modern science shows that fluoridation is ineffective at reducing tooth decay, is harmful to health and is a waste of tax dollars.

Over 1,700 professionals urge Congress to halt fluoridation and conduct hearings to hold federal officials in the Centers for Disease Control's oral health division, specifically, accountable for promoting fluoridation in the face of growing evidence of harm.
You can support them by petitioning your representatives here:
http://congress.fluoridealert.org

7,000 members of eleven Environmental Protection Agency unions made up of scientists and other professionals urge an end to fluoridation, also.

Fluoride is neither a nutrient nor essential for healthy teeth. Fluoride is a drug and, like all drugs, has adverse side effects.

And David Brower did not co-found the Fluoride Action Network

Is Mother Jones hiring fact-checkers these days? I'm very disappointed with how Mother Jones handled this story.

Since fluoride is only in 59 percent of the water, and has been there for a significant period of time, it should be an easy matter to determine the relative dental, physical and spiritual health of those who grew up on it and those who didn't. Is there any data out there?

There is clear evidence that small amounts of fluoride, at or near levels added to U.S. water supplies, present potential risks to the thyroid gland, according to the National Research Council’s (NRC) first-ever published review of the fluoride/thyroid literature.(A)

Fluoride, in the form of silicofluorides, injected into 2/3 of U.S. public water supplies, ostensibly to reduce tooth decay, was never safety-tested.(B)

“Many Americans are exposed to fluoride in the ranges associated with thyroid effects, especially for people with iodine deficiency,” says Kathleen Thiessen, PhD, co-author of the government-sponsored NRC report. “The recent decline in iodine intake in the U.S could contribute to increased toxicity of fluoride for some individuals,” says Thiessen.

“A low level of thyroid hormone can increase the risk of cardiac disease, high cholesterol, depression and, in pregnant woman, decreased intelligence of offspring,” said Thiessen.(C)

Common thyroid symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, fuzzy thinking, low blood pressure, fluid retention, depression, body pain, slow reflexes, and more. It’s estimated that 59 million Americans have thyroid conditions.(D)

Robert Carton, PhD, an environmental scientist who worked for over 30 years for the U.S. government including managing risk assessments on high priority toxic chemicals, says “fluoride has detrimental effects on the thyroid gland of healthy males at 3.5 mg a day. With iodine deficiency, the effect level drops to 0.7 milligrams/day for an average male.”(E) (1.0 mg/L fluoride is in most water supplies)

Among many others, the NRC Report cites human studies which show

- fluoride concentrations in thyroids exceeding that found in other soft tissues except kidney

- an association between endemic goiter and fluoride exposure or enamel fluorosis in human populations

- fluoride adversely affects thyroid and parathyroid hormones, which affect bone health

“If you have a thyroid problem, avoiding fluoride may be a good preventive health measure for you,” writes Drs’ Richard and Karilee Shames in “Thyroid Power.”(F).

Scientific American quotes John Doull, professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, who chaired the NRC committee: “The thyroid changes do worry me.”

“Fluoride can harm bones, teeth, kidneys, the brain and more,” says lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. "It's time to stop fluoridation."

NOt only are fluorides very effective rat poisons, they are also a key ingredient in many psychiatric drugs and were a large part of the nazi mind control plans of WW2:"Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual`s power to resist domination, by slowly poisoning and narcotizing a certain area of the brain, thus making him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him"
hmmm..can't think of any other government around that might be trying to brainwash its citizens... (And judging from some of the posts here the fluoride is starting to work!!!)

Just think about a whole nation on fluoride, and how easy to manage they'd be. I'd appreciate it if you would check into this subject more

Yup, it's tinfoil hat time at MotherJones. Fluoride is not a "drug," it is naturally present in water at variable levels. The correlation of high fluoride with low dental caries was an important public health observation, in the same category as iodination of salt to prevent goiter. The rate of dental caries is way down in the last generation - that obviously isn't due to less sugar in the diet. I suspect the anti-fluoride people are also the anti-vaccination people. Let's see some real evidence that fluoride is a problem, published in respected journals. (Tinfoil-hat web sites and journals with minimal standards don't count.)

Mother's article is incomplete and sadly lacking in credible research. Mother: do it again, with academic methods, presenting both sides. You might also look into that terrrrrible poison in our public water: chlorine, which as a gas killed 1,000's and 1,000 in the Great War. But as a water purifier, has known no equal, and has saved 1,000,000s and 1,000,000s of lives.

I believe the Alcoa Aluminum Corp had to find a way to get rid of the fluorine by product of processing aluminum. Sure worked out well for them didn't it. I remember getting a topical fuoride treatment when I was about 9 years old. That type of treatment is still available and is very effective. It does not need to be in our water and juices, etc. Babies should not be drinking it. Young children are at risk when brushing with toothpaste with fluoride as they often swallow the sweet tasting paste instead of spitting and rinsing their mouths. Chlorine, although it thankfully protects us from water borne pathogens is not good for us either. I like many filter it out whenever possible.

Probably the chief source of Fluorine is in Calcium Fluoride (Fluorspar) My recollection is at the time of an epediomological study of dental caries
the disease was relatively absent where the water supply had traces of fluoride.
After some preliminary tests programs
were initiated to add fluoride to the water supply. The incidence of caries
has been greatly reduced over the years
but not elimiated. It was of course known fluoride is a serious poison in larger quantities (I think 4 mg/L is too high causing risk of accumulation in bones which would be noticeable in elderly over 60. )If the water supply is in good contact with native Fluorspar there should be no need to add any Fluoride. The solubility coefficient of Calcium Fluoride is extremely low;
it is one of the more insoluble salts.
That of course would make it impossible to remove from bone once it accumulates.
At the same time it is the reason it strengthens tooth enamel.
The iodine reversal could be another problem now that people as recommended are cutting down on sodium salt. As Fluoride has such a high reduction potential it is difficult to see how it would directly oxidize to substitute in place of the iodine of T2. However microbes, such as yeast are known for mutations that can carry out amazing catalyses. I shall try to find studies if any F substituted hormones were found to block thyroid receptors.

I was born in Northern Minnesota and was raised and "cut my teeth" on floride water since Minn. was one of the first states to do so; too much and teeth turn brown!
I had a few deformed teeth ( that was NOT a part of our family geneology.
At an early age we moved from Minnesota to a state that had no floridation policy...my teeth improved. I have been brushing with nothing more than baking soda for a long time and guess what...NO CAVITIES!
I think that you are discounting the better care that you are taking of your children.
There really IS NO NEED for it to be put into the water; do you want the government to fold the tissue before they wipe our......?

I live here in Arkansas and was a substitute teacher for awhile ($7.10/hr turned me off). I saw first hand the results of the lack of fluoride in the water. First graders, kindergartners on up with all or most of their baby teeth missing or decayed to the gums, fillings in most young mouths that I never saw when my children were little, having lived in states that promoted fluoride in drinking water. The standing joke is "what do you get with 32 Arkansas cheerleaders? A full set of teeth" is not funny when you see the cause in the very young.

Know that the AWWA [American Water Works association] has reported in one of their ‘Water Conservation pamphlets’ that ‘Less than 1% of utilities treated water is ever consumed [e.g. swallowed] by human beings.’
So, inversely up to 99% of the Silicofluoride treated drinking/tap waters from any Water Treatment Utility never reaches the lips, or is ever swallowed by the Water Bill Ratepayers.
Thus, ‘Fluoridation’ by drinking water delivery is the Worlds Most economically Wasteful, illogical ‘medicant’ delivery system' on the face of this Earth!

Growing up rural Illinois during the late '70's & early 80's, most of the children drinking "public" water have brown staining on our teeth. Since adulthood, I've invested in porcelain veneers to cover the brown stains. My parents told me that they received a letter from the water department saying that they were conducting "fluoride testing." We now know that this "testing" led to most of the children my age to have nasty brown stains on our teeth.

I use non-fluoride toothpaste, and encourage all parents to do the same with your children & yourselves.

Always good to kick at people trying to follow common sense and science. Government agencies fail at that usually but they do follow policy no matter who is injured. Topical might have some benefit but current science shows no reduction in cavities only skyrocketing dental fluorosis damage from enamel in kids damaged by toxic overexposure. Dental fluorosis repair is the new mega money maker pushing dentist incomes above doctors in the last 20 years--way past with fewer hours worked. The FDA has never approved a single ingested fluoride product and they have not one study on the toxic waste from the smokestacks of the phosphate/uranium mines. The same mines produced 75% or US yellow cake Uranium until 1995 when 6 or the uranium recovery units closed down. This was a semi secret operation as it fueled our bomb projects for the AEC and the AEC helped on making fluoride studies appear safe to stop fluoride lawsuits against military contractors. Do you trust their judgement for your benefit? Fluoridation is about Public relations not science. With half of the kids having to live life with teeth pourous, brittle and stained just how happy should we be? The Pizzo 2007 review shows 51% and the CDC still claims 32% but refuses to publish the most current study with 48.42%. Why be honest when you can lie? only 19 of the EPA professional unions demand immediate moratorium because of fraud and cancer risk. Trust a toxicologist not a dentist for health effects. Indiana found out only 17% understood the current science of fluoride and 14% in Illinois (Yoder K.M. 2007). Dentists still believe in fluoride and the tooth fairy. Pray the truth fairy visits them. Very few countries follow this foolish waste disposal method but now we are importing toxic waste from China to get extra lead maybe.? The testing agency NSF refuses to list the 20 plus contaminates from arsenic to a long list of radioactive decay products. The truth might scare people. The real risks are from a cumulative overload as fluoride is attracted to bones and thyroid, kidneys ,pineal glan etc. We pass about 50% with healthy kidneys but much less as we age or have diabetes or other high water intake issues. Name any other drug safe for all at any level because this is not like a vitamin in that it is cumulative forever just like lead but more toxic. The goal for lead and arsenic is ZERO with 10ppb arsenic allowed and 15ppb lead but 4000ppb fluoride. This is not logical for safety and we add 700-1200ppb and expect no ill effects? The maas 2007 study show FSA product excellent for leaching lead from brass faucets and meters and copper solder pipes up to 900% increases. Lead is known to damage brains forever at very low levels just like all the new studies showing lower IQ from fluoride and behavior problems. Jim Schultz

One simple call can open up this 'can of worms', call the utilities department and request the American Water Works Association Standard for Fluorosilicic Acid B703-06, the liquid form most often used, easier to apply to drinking water systems.
The forword give the source and process evolving the fluoridation agent and note 'very corrosive'. Another sentence: "The transfer of contaminants from chemicals to processed water or the residual solids is becoming a problem of greater concern." Then page 13 is an entire page of contaminants ranging from heavy metals as arsenic, lead, etc down to 'radionuclides' as uranium and radium 226-228, all low levels, but depending on your diet's calcium, can be cumulative in teeth, bones and tissues, even crosses the Blood Brain Barrier, which is why Prozac, Paxil, and Luvox are fluorinated antidepressants. See The Merck Index.
Look up the element; Fluorine, which forms fluorides, most reactive of all elements and used to enrich the isotopes of uranium for nuclear power.

Two government books available from library Interlibrary Loan, that will also clear up the question are;

1, Toxicological Profile for Fluorides, Hydrogen Fluoride, and Fluorine (F) 1993, see pages 112, 125, 128 and 129.
2. Health Effects of Ingested Fluoride, 1993, National Academy of Sciences' report for Congress. See pages; 5, 11, 16, 30, 34 (color pix of moderate to severe dental fluorosis), 41, 44-45 (cavities form in these weakened teeth), 128 (soft drinks and processed foods are major sources), and 129 (High dietary levels of calcium can form insoluble complexes with fluoride, making it unabsorbable from the gastrointestinal tract.)

Fluoride is accumulated in the body over a lifetime. At higher levels of concentration, it makes bones brittle. Just do a wee bit of research.
1. Library reference section, look up the element Fluorine that forms fluorides and see the history.
2. In Merck Index, look up element Fluorine and see that it combines with most all other elements. And..most sources are the phosphate fertilizer industries wet scrubbers that use tons of aquifier water that fills cooling ponds with fluorosilicic acid, most often used commercial grade fluoridation agent.
3. Request the AWWA Standard for Fluorosilicic Acid B703-06 from the local utilities department. See an entire page of contaminants ranging from heavy metals as arsenic, lead, and radionuclides as uranium and radium 226-228. Low levels, but can be cumulative in people with poor diets.

I constantly get compliments on how white and strong my teeth are, and I didn't get my first cavity until I moved here. I don't think it's the availability of dental care - there's dentists chockablock where I live, and going to the dentist for a cleaning costs less than $6. Since the water isn't flouridated here, I'm going to credit flouride for the strength of my teeth.

Can anyone here please tell me if they know whether or not those water filters that you can buy & attach to your faucet also filter out floride, & what other contaminents they do and do not filter out? Also I'd like to know which kind of filter is the best.
I've heard (I think it was on "Now" on PBS)that a large amount of the drugs that we take, pass through our urine, into the sewage line, and travel to the sewage treatment plants; where the urine is "purifid" into drinking water, & put back into the public water system; and that some of them (such as the hormones from birth controll pills) are composed of molecules so small that the sewage treatment plants can't filter them out; & the contaminated water goes right back into the tap water.
